Lord Black has secured Ministerial assurances that journalistic sources and professional legal privileged will be protected by the Criminal Cases Review Commission when they are given new powers later this year.
The new powers allow the Criminal Cases Review Commission access to information held by private companies during their investigation. At the moment they are only allowed access to information held by public authorities.
Whilst supporting the changes that protect people from miscarriages of justice, on Friday 11th March a House of Lords Bill Commitee discussed an amendment he had proposed to the the Criminal Cases Review Commission (Information) Billto ensure that this extremely sensitive information would be properly protected.
Following assurances that protection of sources would be protected in the Commission's codes, Lord Black withdrew his amendment.
